Backfiring is normal.
Suggest you dump about half a bottle of automotive fuel injector cleaner into the fuel tank and go for a long ride. Sounds like you have a little "varnish" from old gas in your lower jets. Be sure to use the highest octane gas you can find and avoid gasoline/ethanol mixes.
